Who or what is FARB?
FARB is a talks and networking group for people interested in hearing about the results of research being done by foreign academics living and working in Belgium. They include staff and students at the universities of Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and Liège, and Fulbright students and other postgraduates from universities worldwide who just happen to have ended up, temporarily, in Belgium. Staff from the European political institutions and international organisations, are also regular visitors to our meetings: everyone is welcome, academic or not.
We have a programme of talks where members present an aspect of their research or work in progress to the group, for creative feedback and discussions. Our programme is focused on sharing ideas and solving problems connected to research.
How do I get in touch with you? Through this link.
Who can join? Anyone who is interested in or active in university-level research in any subject area, carried out in Belgium. The group was originally intended to support those researchers who aren’t affiliated to an institution in Belgium, and who need a research community to call their own. We have developed our scope since then, but helping each other with fiddly research problems is still a key aspect of what we do.
Where do we meet? In Brussels we meet at the Expatica Café, Rue François Gay 152, 1150 Woluwe St Pierre, Brussels. By public transport: take trams 39 or 44 from Montgomery to Jules César or Groene Hond, and walk up Ave de Val d'Or/Guldendaallaan for three blocks (20 mins max). The café is on the corner of François Gay and Ave de Val d'Or. By car: take the Ring to the Tervuren junction and drive into Brussels up Avenue de Tervuren. Once past the Tram Museum, take the slow lane on the right to make the turning into Ave Val d'Or.
We also have meetings once or twice a year at the Universities of Ghent and Liège, see the Monthly Programme for details.
When is this? At 11.00-13.30, on the last Saturday of each month, except in the summer (we don’t meet in July or August), and in December when we have a special meeting on a different Saturday. Look at the Monthly Programme page for the talks scheduled so far, and those we've had in the past.
How does it work? We split the meeting into two parts. The first part is the research talk, with one or two presentations, followed by a discussion. Then we get out the sandwiches, and start to talk ‘business’, swapping information, news, advice about finding grants and job, library access, who to ask about particular things. This usually develops into gossip, chat, and a networking session.
Why should I come along? You’ll hear fascinating accounts of research in progress, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute and offer suggestions, you’ll amaze yourself by finding that what you didn’t think was specially helpful to being actually pretty useful. You’ll make friends. You'll eat good homemade cake and biscuits.
How can I participate? If you want to become part of the FARB community, receiving all details of forthcoming conferences, events and important news about research-related activities in Belgium, the membership fee is €10. For this you also get space on this website, and can link it to your own home or institution page if you have one. If you know you can't come to meetings very often, but still want to join FARB, contact us to find out how to pay your membership fee by virement or cheque.
The additional fee for coming to each meeting (though you pay nothing at your first meeting) is €2.
